How to Wash Down Sleeping Bags
Our tips for keeping your sleeping bag in good shape all season long.
Although you don't need to wash your sleeping bag after every use, we recommend washing it after every ~20 days of camping.
Spot Clean
- Hold off on a full wash as long as you can to avoid decreasing the loft - start with spot cleaning by mixing a mild soap with water and using a toothbrush to tackle smaller areas
Detergent Matters
- When you end up doing a full wash, we recommend you use a down-specific detergent to protect loft - our favorite is Nikwax Down Wash Direct
Unzip & Front Load
- If possible, use a front loading washer vs. a top loading one and unzip the bag completely to prevent snagging or breaking
Double Rinse
- Rinse at least 2x to remove any cleaning agents that could remain and prevent the down from lofting
Dry It Out
- Gently squeeze out any excess water then set it in the dryer on LOW heat with 2-3 tennis balls (they help to break up clumps and refill the loft)
Store Properly
- Ensure the bag is completely dry and then store it in a large cotton or mesh sack in a cool & dry place
